Humidity refers to the amount of moisture present in the air. It is expressed as a percentage, known as relative humidity (RH), which indicates the current moisture level relative to the maximum it can hold at a given temperature. As spring approaches, many homeowners start to notice an increase in indoor humidity levels, particularly if ventilation is poor.

High humidity can lead to several issues, including:

           1. Mold Growth:

Excess moisture fosters mold growth, which can significantly affect indoor air quality and pose health risks.

Solution: Regularly check for mold in damp areas and use dehumidifiers to keep moisture levels in check.

           2. Allergies and Respiratory Issues:

High humidity can aggravate allergies and lead to respiratory issues due to mold spores and dust mites thriving in these conditions.

Solution: Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to reduce indoor allergens.

           Damage to Belongings:

Wooden furniture, electronics, and even your home's structure can be damaged over time by high humidity levels.

Solution: Maintain humidity levels between 30-50% to protect your belongings and home.

The Relationship Between Humidity and Temperature

As temperatures rise in spring and summer, humidity levels can shift dramatically. It may seem counterintuitive, but the warm summer months can bring lower humidity levels on average compared to the spring, depending on the climate and geographical location. This phenomenon can have various effects on comfort and practicality:

            Evaporative Cooling:

In lower humidity settings, evaporation happens more quickly, making it feel cooler. Conversely, high humidity tends to feel warmer because sweat does not evaporate as efficiently from the skin.

            Energy Efficiency:

In many regions, air conditioning units work harder in humid conditions, leading to increased energy consumption. Proper humidity control can enhance system efficiency.

Tips for Managing Indoor Humidity

           1. Use Dehumidifiers:

Installing dehumidifiers in areas prone to moisture can significantly mitigate issues related to high humidity. They come in various sizes and capacities, making them suitable for whole-house or specific room use.

           2. Proper Ventilation:

Always ensure that your home is well-ventilated. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to expel moisture-laden air. Open windows when feasible to promote air circulation.

           3. Humidity Monitors:

Invest in a hygrometer to keep track of indoor humidity levels. This inexpensive tool can help you make informed decisions regarding humidity control measures.

           4. Air Conditioning:

Regularly use and maintain your air conditioning system, as it acts as a dehumidifier during operation. Ensure it is functioning correctly to keep humidity levels down while cooling your space.

           5. Houseplants:

While plants can help purify the air, over-watering can lead to increased humidity. Choose low-maintenance plants designed for indoor environments, and avoid over watering them.

           Seasonal Adjustments

As you prepare for the warmer months, consider making seasonal adjustments to your humidity control strategy!

            Regular Maintenance:

Schedule seasonal check-ups for your HVAC system to ensure components are functioning optimally and efficiently. A well-maintained unit can significantly improve humidity control in your home.

            Inspect and Repair Leaks:

Regularly check for and repair leaks in your roofing, foundation, and plumbing. Moisture ingress through leaks can contribute significantly to humidity issues.

            Landscaping:

Landscaping can affect humidity levels around your home. Proper drainage and the strategic placement of plants can help manage moisture levels near the foundation.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the comfort and healthfulness of the air within our homes and workplaces. It encompasses various factors such as temperature, humidity, and the presence of pollutants. With people spending so much time indoors, maintaining high IAQ standards is crucial for overall health. Poor air quality can cause immediate effects such as headaches and dizziness and long-term impacts like respiratory diseases.

Filtration is a key component in HVAC systems, helping to clean the air circulating through our homes. High-quality air filters trap dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles. But not all filters are created equal.

: Filters come with Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (MERV) ratings, indicating their effectiveness at capturing particles. Higher MERV ratings mean finer filtration but can restrict airflow if not matched to the system's capacity.

            1. Dehumidifiers: If you live in a humid region, using a dehumidifier can help maintain optimal humidity levels. Portable and whole-home dehumidifiers are available, depending on your needs.

            2. Humidifiers: In dryer climates, adding moisture to the air with a humidifier can improve comfort and protect against dry skin and respiratory discomfort.

            3. Ventilation: Proper ventilation enables air exchange, helping to reduce humidity levels. Consider exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to move moist air outside.

            1. Invest in a Quality HVAC System: Choosing a system that meets your home’s specific needs will greatly influence air quality.

            2. Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular maintenance with a trusted HVAC professional to ensure your system operates efficiently.

            3. Monitor Indoor Conditions: Use hygrometers to monitor humidity levels and air quality monitors to detect pollutants and allergens.

            4. Opt for Natural Solutions: Consider houseplants that are known for helping purify the air, such as peace lilies and snake plants.

            5. Education: Stay informed about your indoor air quality and make adjustments as necessary.

Conclusion: Where Do We Go From Here?

Improving indoor air quality is not just about fancy gadgets; it’s about understanding the systems that keep our homes comfortable! High Performance HVAC in any weather - Unified Comfort Systems

Hello Akron, Ohio! Its been a couple of crazy weeks since our last HVAC blog. We've had some insane winter temperatures, from arctic conditions of negative 16 degrees (We got A LOT of calls that week!!) to spring-like sunny days approaching 60! And now, this week, all of NE Ohio is covered in a layer of ice!

               I've said it before,

if you live in Ohio, this is just another walk in the park

. Sometimes we use our Heat and our A/C in the same day, it happens!

For those of us at Unified Comfort Systems, whether you're using your Heat and A/C in the same day or not, we want to see those units performing at top efficiency, with all its safety maintenance performed, clean air filters, the whole deal!

If your furnace doesn't work when you want it to, what good is it??

To ensure that your furnace works when you want it to, regular maintenance is recommended! We offer yearly maintenance deals that keep you covered for this season and the next! If you have some unexpected issues come up, we can schedule an appointment that works for you, and show up right on time, with none of the waiting around for a 4-hour period like other companies!

If your furnace is approaching the point where it is uneconomical to replace parts, it costs too much to operate, or its breaking down more and more often, it may be time to replace it with a new higher-efficiency model.

Akron Ohio had its first little snow for the year, we got about 2 inches, which for those that live in the snow belt of Ohio, is just another day in the park. Temperatures were in the high 20's and furnaces we're giving it all they had to keep those in their homes warm and cozy.

This was also the weekend that my thermostat broke. The batteries were new and the unit read that the heat was on (can confirm that it was not) and that temps were dropping into the low 60s. What I did and what I should have done were two different things...

What I should have done was to book an appointment for Monday morning with Unified Comfort Systems, so they could have technician out first thing and repair my HVAC issue. What I decided to do, with my 'Ain't nobody got time for that' attitude was to pop the face-plate off and on all day, so that the heat would actually turn on for a few minutes – It was the wrong decision and I regret everything.

If this situation sounds familiar, firstly, I'm sorry we've shared the experience, and secondly, I've already mentioned the solution –

(or a couple clicks on their website) would have solved all of my problems. A tech would have been to my house, at a time that worked for me, with none of that between 8am and 2pm nonsense from other companies, and everything would have been peachy.

The winter season brings out the best and the worst in furnaces. Its when they're most heavily used to keep our homes and families warm and cozy. If something were to break and go wrong, this season of high-stress on the unit is when it will mostly likely happen. Preparation, prevention, and the productivity of your HVAC system is of utmost importance. At Unified Comfort Systems, we believe that a well-maintained HVAC system is the cornerstone of a comfortable and energy-efficient home!

Winter is also a time when a non-functioning furnace is most noticeable. If the heat isn't working, temps are going to quickly drop inside - folks are gonna get cold and cranky!

A typical furnace will last around 15 to 20 years, so if you're furnace was installed prior to 2011, you're nearing the time frame of the units end of life. Regular maintenance and changing the filters is one of the best ways to extend the life of your furnace - and the perfect time to do it is now, before its needed all day, everyday this winter!

Major Step 2: Change Air Filters Regularly

Dirty Filters reduce airflow and strain your system! Replace them every 1-3 months to keep your HVAC running smoothly. Keep your senses active in case of strange smells or noises, a musty smell is fairly common when turning on your furnace for the first time, but a smell that lasts for hours and lingers, or a repetitive clanging may be a sign of a deeper issue.

Replacing parts and performing repairs will extend the life of the unit and is often more beneficial than replacing the unit, unless the unit is nearing its end of life window (15+ years) – As the unit ages, it may be more cost effective to replace rather than to repair and our Comfort Professionals will explain everything in great detail to our customers.

Customers should also avoid blocking air vents and registers, a blocked vent forces your system to work harder. Carpets, furniture, even curtains can obstruct airflow.

Investing in new home insulation is also a great way to conserve energy, keeping what you generate inside the home, so you can use less energy overall! Proper insulation in your attic and walls will retain heat, and reduce the workload on your HVAC.

The efficiency of a furnace is calculated by a ratio of 'energy in' to 'heat out'

The minimum efficiency requirement in America for a furnace is 80%. This means that 80% of the energy taken in is directly converted into heat and 20% is lost during conversion. Fuel-fired furnaces are by far the most popular style of home heating systems and they operating using natural gas or propane for their fuel source.

The most efficient furnaces are around 98.5%, only losing 1.5% of converted energy – which means your paying a lot less in lost energy! But how is this calculated? How can a consumer know that their furnace is running at peak efficiency?? By hiring an HVAC Professional like Unified Comfort Systems to a look at the by-products (the gasses) left over after the combustion process of the furnace.

This process is called Combustion Analysis, and it saves energy, money, and lives.

Any fuel-fired appliance can require a combustion analysis and one should definitely be done when the appliance is installed. We're going to go with a Furnace as the appliance for our examples, because Unified Comfort Systems is an HVAC provider and we deal with many, many furnaces in and around Akron, Canton, Ravenna, and beyond. One of the benefits to having combustion analysis done when installed is that we can show you loss of efficiency over time, as the device ages and has given you all that it can. Doing this analysis on a new, 10, and 20 year old furnace will show different results, and different levels of combustion efficiency, even on the same unit. Its one of the ways we can actually show our customers that their unit is under-performing, and costing extra just to keep running, due to loss of efficiency as the unit has aged.

           Combustion Produces Measurable by-products

Furnaces produce gasses after combustion, these are; Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Oxygen (O2). Carbon Monoxide is poisonous to humans and can endanger those inside a home when emissions are too high, CO monitors are highly recommended in homes because of this. Carbon Dioxide, is generally not harmful, but in concentrated amounts can lead to serious health problems. Oxygen is perfectly fine for humans, but is highly combustible, meaning that its PPM or parts-per-million must be managed properly when near to an open flame!

Three types of combustion: Perfect, Complete, and Incomplete

Perfect Combustion AKA Stoichiometric (Stoy-kee-oh-meh-trick) combustion:

This is the theoretical goal. All of the fuel will completely combust with no deficiency or excess of the reagent (fuel), it is all consumed, and it is 100% efficient. It is only theoretical because of 2 reasons, #1 Perfect combustion assumes 100% Oxygen is present in the air. The reality is that the Oxygen in the air is only at 20.9%. Reason #2 is because of heat loss, or thermal loss in any combustion. There is no way to stop heat transfer during a combustion, it can only be reduced.

            Complete Combustion:

This is the actual goal in combustion analysis! Unified Comfort Systems will read and balance your ratio of fuel to air, so that all of the fuel will burn, while no carbon and hydrogen composites are left. Complete combustion ensures the highest level of burning efficiency that your furnace can achieve, that your family is only breathing clean air, and that the appliance is going to enjoy a longer lifespan!

This is what combustion analysis was designed to fix. An inadequate supply of air, and fuel not fully combusted, will combine and release Carbon Monoxide. For a natural gas furnace, fueled mainly by methane gas (CH4),

when the levels of oxygen are insufficient, only 1 oxygen atom will attach to 1 carbon atom, creating Carbon Monoxide.

We want 2 oxygen atoms to attach to 1 carbon atom, creating CO2, or Carbon Dioxide,

and releasing only CO2, H2O (water) and moderate heat into the flue of the furnace. Incomplete combustion releases Carbon Monoxide, Methane (found in natural gas), high heat, and possibly smoke/soot into your flue. It not only is a threat to human life but presents a real fire hazard.

The idea of the thermostat has been around for quite a while. Mankind needed a way to physically perform an action on a heating or cooling system, that would automate temperature detection and allow fluctuations around the set temperature point - They invented a thermostat. Thermostats are found in more than just HVAC systems, they exist in: Ovens, Refrigerators, Water heaters, Engines, Incubators, and more. They are the main portal for a homes total comfort.

A smart thermostat, like the Ecobee Premium or Ion™ Gray is akin to a well conducted orchestra – everyone involved performs their job perfectly! When installed by the HVAC professionals at Unified Comfort Systems, enjoy an extended product warranty, and know that your system is at peak performance!

Lets take a brief step back in time. In the earliest of thermostat technologies, bimetallic strips were used to detect temperature changes and convert them into mechanical action. Typically, thin brass and iron bars were banded together, when temperatures increased, these bars bent, and tilted a capsule of liquid mercury, causing a mechanical action that completed a circuit, igniting the furnace.

These older systems relied on noticeable temperature changes with variations of 1 to 2 degrees of the set point. They were either full on or full off, with no middle ground. These were incredibly easy to implement, but allowed for wide temperature swings of up to 4 degrees, and systems did not have any type of low power mode to help swing small temperature variations – they were all or nothing. There was room for improvement to the thermostat, and HVAC system.

Soon after thermostat manufacturers began to implement an early shut off system. A thin wire, called an anticipator, that would heat up quickly from flowing current, and shut off the system BEFORE the desired temperature was reached. This was the early beginnings of predictive home comfort and offered more granular control of temperature settings. But there is still room for improvement! These prior systems were all mechanical, electricity was a whole new beginning for the thermostat.

Beginning in the 1980s, with advancements to microelectronics, digital thermostats made their debut. They offered basic on/off capabilities and a more accurate digital display. More improvements came in the form of thermostats containing thermistors, a combination of a transistor and a resistor, and one that varies its resistance based on temperature. Thermistors are highly sensitive to temperature changes and helped to bring about a game changer: the digital thermostat.

Fast forward ten years to the 1990's and digital thermostats offer the ability to be programmed for different times of the day. It caught on quickly and for a time was highly popular. However, as time passed, this was seen as more of a hassle, needing to know the weather each day to set the program became more of a burden than just sending a child to bump up the temperature. This did not go unnoticed by manufacturers and, you guessed it, there was room for improvement!

In the early 2000's smart devices made an appearance, they were fancy, and internet connected, but they were expensive! So it took some time before they began to come down in price and be accepted by more and more homes across America. Now, in 2024, there is a voice-enabled device in everyone's pocket and smart devices are commonplace in our homes – including thermostats.

Because a smart device is internet connected, they're able to communicate with other devices on your network. Smart thermostats like the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Pro and Ion™ Gray Smart Thermostat connect to sensors located around the home to ensure that each room is at your perfect comfort level! The baby room can be kept warmer while the kitchen is able to cool down after using the oven.

Apps for iOS and Android phones take it step further, and connect to your smart thermostat allowing you to change settings even while away from home. If you're going to be gone longer than you thought, adjust the temperature to save money and energy. If the temps drop and it starts snowing, which is totally possible at any time in Ohio, you can boot your furnace in to a low power mode to slowly heat your home because these smart thermostats are able to direct multi-phase heating and cooling!

Not only are the Ecobee Premium and Ion™ Grey Smart Thermostat internet connected, they make it easier than ever to view the overall status of your homes HVAC performance. With the large digital screen, and color scheme, its easy to see your home's humidity levels, current air quality, heating or cooling status, plus they offer remote system viewing that your HVAC technician can see in real time, all to ensure that your HVAC is operating at peak performance!

40 years is a long time to learn and improve your technology! HVAC is no exception as manufacturers have pushed the limits of energy efficiency, 'smart' technology, integration, coolants, and user controls via the internet of things as well as Bluetooth connected applications.

The past 40+ years have seen millions of dollars in research poured into the HVAC industry, both by government grants and manufacturer research and development. Standards have been updated, minimum efficiency values increased, coolants changed, phases added, and the size of HVAC heating and cooling units has decreased dramatically over time – Just as modern computers have advanced from behemoth sized machines, HVAC systems have undergone significant size reductions from their bulky predecessors.

           Energy Efficiency –

As technology advances, devices of any type tend to become smaller, more affordable, and more efficient. They can either use less energy for the same result or use the same amount of energy with a greater result. The HVAC industry is no exception, air conditioning and furnace units use to be bulky, expensive, and required near-constant maintenance – Think of a crew stoking a coal powered furnace, constant maintenance and a crew were needed just to maintain the heat and energy output.

As time progressed, the US Government placed minimum energy efficiency requirements on HVAC units. At first, around 1987 it was SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) 10 for air conditioning units, in 2023 it was changed yet again to be a minimum of 14 SEER (or 13.4 SEER2) for northern states. Furnaces were given the minimum standard of 80% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) in 2015, but to be considered 'High Efficiency' they need to be rated at 90% AFUE.

A new player in the game, 'Smart' Appliances are web connected (via the Internet of Things) and increasingly have phone applications so that owners can control their HVAC heating and cooling systems while away from home, or let the system handle everything automatically! This industry took off around 2010, but had been ramping up for the past decade. Sensors inside of air conditioning units and furnaces analyze and send data to consumers, who can either make adjustments or let the system perform automatically.

Connecting these systems to the internet also allows for total integration with other 'smart' appliances, such as thermostats, allowing for temperature zoning in various parts of the home or office.

Commercial applications use smart technologies for their HVAC, allowing for remote monitoring and Building Management Systems which optimize indoor temperatures based on how many people are present, time of day, and conditions outside.

           HVAC Integration –

This plays a bit into Smart Technologies, as HVAC systems are increasingly able to connect and communicate with other various Internet of Things devices. For example, an HVAC integrated with a home security system, or building management system can determine if people are in the home or office, and adjust the temperatures to save money on energy bills. If you come home or enter the office at nearly the same time everyday, your smart system can even learn those patterns of behavior and apply your settings without your input! These HVAC integrations adjust performance based on a variety of factors, all designed with superior comfort and energy savings baked in.

Government Regulations and updated standards –

Since the 1970's the US Government has had an interest in HVAC systems efficiency, performance, and components. The energy crisis of the 70s, when suddenly less fuel was being imported than was being used, sparked the federal government's interests in energy consumption – Leading to the first round of national standards of energy use for appliances. By 1992 the federal government had established the Energy Star Program, which breaks down the energy usage of appliances into a sort of 'nutrition label' that is easily understood by someone with zero training in the HVAC industry. It gives an estimated cost per year and estimated savings per year over other units.

The Government continually updates these guidelines as more information on new tech becomes available, for example, in 1994, Freon was linked to ozone destruction, and new air conditioner coolants were created and adopted, which either increased performance or kept performance at its current level, with the added bonus of being less destructive to the environment.

            Coolants aka Refrigerants –

In the modern world, Freon, as the trademarked name, or R12, is kind of the OG when it comes to Air Conditioner coolants, its been around since the 1920s. It was not toxic to humans, or flammable, but it was found to be harmful to the ozone layer and was banned in many countries by the late 1990s. While the brand Freon is still used, the chemical composition has been dramatically changed. This ban began an international effort to find more environmentally acceptable coolants, and the US Government, along with manufacturing companies, spent millions of dollars in research, and grants, to produce a better performing coolant - One that was not detrimental to our environment, not extremely flammable, and not toxic to humans, preferably all three.

Moving into the near present, over the past 25 years, the main refrigerant has been R410a. But this has also begun to be phased out. In 2021 the EPA signed the final rules for phasing out of HFC (Hydroflurocarbon) refrigerants by 85% over 15 years, to be replaced with the modern A2Ls.

A2L's are low toxicity, lower flammability, and have a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) than its predecessors making them an excellent choice for the time being. States in the US are adopting new building codes to use A2Ls and 2024 saw broad adoption of this refrigerant.

The HVAC Industry has greatly advanced indoor air quality and has set a strong emphasis on continually improving the air that we breathe while inside. Filter technology has increased to the point where HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters can trap up to 99.7% of airborne particles, some mere microns wide. Carbon filters absorb and block odors, gases, chemicals, and volatile organic compounds (VoCs). Some filters use a combination of a traditional air filter of fiberglass, Carbon to absorb smells and gasses, and finally a HEPA to block the smallest particulates, to get the best of all three.

Air Filters are rated in MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), ratings which vary from 1 to 20. Each stage represents the ability to trap smaller and smaller particles, bacteria, virus', and gasses. A range of 9 to 12 is considered “Superior” for a residential space, and “Better” for a commercial space. On the low end of the scale, between 1 and 4 are window air conditioner units, and on the high end of 17 to 20 are Cleanrooms and Pharmaceutical operations where the smallest contaminant can ruin an entire run or batch.

The HVAC Industry and Federal Government will continue to improve on energy efficiency, unit size, performance, coolants, and improved heat exchange systems. Multistage heating and cooling is already here, which can be thought of as a 'high' and 'low' setting. When minor temperature variations occur, the furnace or AC can perform in low power mode to gently adjust your settings. These models sacrifice no power and when in high power mode can greatly sway temperatures when needed.

The HVAC Industry just loves acronyms, even HVAC itself stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. We've seen some of the more common HVAC acronyms - BTU, AFUE, and SEER. Many customers need to rely on their technician to explain these terms and recommend a properly sized unit, but we wanted to help explain these to our customers! We're going to cover all of these terms, and a few more, in depth, so that you can have a better idea of what exactly you have currently and what you're purchasing in a replacement unit.

Air conditioners and furnaces in America are rated in BTU per hour, so an 18,000 BTU unit will use that much energy each hour. This may seem like big number but remember, each BTU is just a single match worth of energy. The definition of a BTU is:

Because of this definition, the amount of heat needed to melt 2000lb of ice to liquid water is called a “Ton” or 12,000BTU per hour – So we can measure air conditioners in Tons or BTUs!

established by the US Dept of Energy. An air conditioner or heat pump with better energy efficiency will have a higher SEER rating than one of lower efficiency. SEER efficiency ratings are calculated by taking the total cooling output, during a typical season, and dividing it by the total energy input used during the same length of time. Certain regions of America require minimum SEER ratings. SEER is the older form of this rating, replaced by SEER2.

           - The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio2 was a change made in January 2023 to the SEER calculation. It increased the required static pressure by 5 times the current amount. It was raised from .1 inches in a water column to .5 inches. This static pressure change more accurately shows the amount of resistance the air must push through to reach the area it is cooling. The US Dept of Energy has determined that the minimum SEER2 rating in North America should be no less than 13.4.

The minimum requirement for a furnace is 80% AFUE, meaning 80 percent of the fuel used comes out as heat, and the remaining 20 percent is lost during the process. This is considered low efficiency heating and is costing extra each month in lost energy. Current technology allows for furnaces and boilers with an AFUE rating of 98.5%, meaning just one-and-a-half percent of energy or fuel is lost in conversion.

. Since a heat pump has a heating and cooling setting, they have an HSPF rating and a SEER2 rating, measuring each of the settings abilities. In Northeast Ohio, the HSPF rating is highly important because we get 4 to 6 months of winter each year, aim for a heat pump with an HSPF of 8 to 10.

Also updated in January 2023 by the Dept of Energy, testing measures were updated to better reflect real world conditions. The temperature of the simulation were dropped from 47° F to 35° F because heat pumps loose efficiency in colder temperatures. The parameters were adjusted for partial load conditions, because heat pumps do not always run at 100% capacity (HSPF assumed 100% loads on the unit at all times) and the fans speeds were recalculated for continual use, better reflecting modern units. Similarly to SEER2, HSPF2 also requires a static pressure of .5 inches in a water column. HSPF2 calculations result in a smaller number than HSPF, the calculation can be done by multiplying the HSPF by .89 to get an estimated HSPF2 rating. A minimum HSPF2 rating of 7.5 is required for the EnergyStar rating and nothing less than this should be considered, its just not powerful enough for Northeast Ohio.

EER measures 'Electricity in' to 'Cooling Out'. The formula is Cooling Output in BTU per hour, divided by Energy Input in watt hours. There is no minimum EER rating for states across Northern America, but the southwest states require a minimum of 11 EER. This rating is most important for climates with hot summers steadily approaching 95° F.

Winter is Coming - Prepare your Furnaces

Northeast Ohio has some weird weather patterns...

Sometimes we get a Spring season, but not always - and it's really more of a Monsoon season that eventually heats up into a Summer Heat Wave. Our Fall season is more like a Decent into Winter, nearly skipping the Autumn leaf colors, and right into shoveling piles of snow from our driveways.

Akron Ohio is in that last little bit of Summer Heat Wave meets Decent into Winter, meaning we wake up to sub 50 degree temps and within a few hours temps are pushing 90 outside. As a result, many households are using their furnace in the morning and AC in the afternoons.

But before a furnace is turned on the first time for the year, there is a check-list of things to do to keep everyone safe and comfortable...Lets Dive in!

              To help avoid musty smells

            – Change the air filter and ensure that the ventilation is clear. As the furnace fires up for the first time in a year, accumulated dust, bugs, and dander on the heat exchanger or other elements is agitated and burned off. This leads to a musty smell that shouldn't last more than a couple of hours.

If you still smell a burning musty odor after several hours

, call a reputable HVAC Company like Unified Comfort Systems to check out your system at (330) 952-4822 – We operate in Summit, Stark, Portage and Tuscarawas Counties. There could be frayed and exposed wiring, or a clogged filter, leading to overheating issues and an overworked blower motor. These should be checked out by a professional who knows what to look for and where to look!

To keep the furnace operating safely

            – Assure that the area around the heating unit is clear and relatively clean. Furnaces are usually located in a basement, garage, closet, or even an attic – All spaces where we tend to store goods and products that aren't in use. Some of these are flammable; cardboard boxes, carpets, chemicals, and delicates stored in paper wrapping. These can be dangerous if left unattended for long periods around a furnace, so clear out an area around your furnace. Certain parts of a furnace can get extremely hot and be a safety concern.

To keep your home at peak comfort

           – Open air vents and ensure that vents and returns are not blocked. Furniture, carpets, and pet fur are the top contenders for blocked vents and air returns. Vents can be thought of as veins for a furnace, heat pump, or boiler, directing and placing warm air where it needs to be and circulating cold air back to the heart of the furnace. When a vent is closed, it's basically a blocked artery – Not Good!

              To keep your home safe

            – Test and change the batteries in your home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. In rare cases of a severe furnace problem, fires can start indoors. Smoke detectors are one of the best ways to detect when smoke and fire may be present, endangering human life. If you have trouble reaching your smoke alarms, Unified Comfort Systems can change the batteries and test your smoke alarms during service calls.

               To stop energy loss

           – Check your home for spots where cold air is entering. When heated air is able to easily escape the home, your heating system needs to work harder to make up for that loss, costing you more money and energy. Having these air leaks sealed will vastly improve the comfort of your home and stability of your HVAC system. Need help with this? Give us a call! This is an overlapping problem that concerns HVAC as well as Air Sealing and Insulation.

Let’s go over several reasons why an Air Conditioner might be blowing hot air...

We are going to skip the simple answers, everyone knows to set the thermostat to 'Cool' when you want cold air

(although it happens more often than some would like to admit!)

Is your air filter clogged to the point that the systems cannot 'breathe'? -

An air filter that is clogged with dust, dander, and fur cannot effectively filter air into the system. It will impede the cooling ability of the unit, forcing it to work harder, longer, and rack up kilowatt hours on electricity bills. Replacing a clogged filter can drastically improve system performance.

Is the outside unit (the Condenser Unit) full of debris?

             - Similarly to an air filter, a clogged AC unit cannot properly 'exhale' hot air and can lead to overheating and impaired cooling ability. These units should be regularly cleaned with a maintenance package provided by Unified Comfort Systems.

Airflow restrictions caused by a build up of debris, or low refrigerant levels can result in a frozen evaporator coil, a common issue seen on outdoor Air Conditioners. Turning the unit off is the first step to avoiding actual damage! Its going to be a hot day for your home and you may want to plan a visit to friends or family while the Comfort Professionals work on your Air Conditioner. Unified Comfort Systems will check your refrigerant levels, recharge the system if required, and check the unit's system with our 25 point safety and operational check.

All of these can be a reason for low refrigerant – Which can lead to a host of other problems! It's best to catch it early. Unified Comfort Systems will check your system pressure, refrigerant levels, seals, and more with our Service Calls or Maintenance Plan.

Units that are not sized correctly to cool your indoor space -

Air Conditioners are built in different sizes to accommodate the different homes and buildings they will be placed into. A unit is rated in several ways, most commonly the Energy Efficiency rating in SEER or EER, the Tonnage, and often the Decibels are listed as well to get an idea of how loud or quiet the device will run. An air conditioner that is too small will struggle to cool your home or office, may run constantly to attempt to keep up with the settings – which will increase your bills as well. An air conditioner that is too large will run short cycles and cause comfort issues as well. We use state-of-the-art software for sizing which meets the ACCA Manual J standard.
