From Chill to Grill - Is your AC Full of Hot Air?

September 11, 2024

Imagine that you've just arrived home....

You've grabbed all of your grocery bags, and helped swoop the kids inside - only to find that its hot and stagnant in your home.  The kids are cranky and yelling, everyone just wants to cool off inside and for some reason the air conditioner is blowing hot air.  What are you doing to do?

You can almost hear the scene above and no one wants to be put into a situation like it.  So what can you do?  Give Unified Comfort Systems a call!  We're backed by 30 years of construction experience and have over 34 years of HVAC technician experience between our crew.

Our Comfort Professionals will diagnose your Air Conditioner to find the exact reason why it isn't effectively cooling your home.  There are several reasons why this may happen and we have specialized HVAC technology provided by MeasureQuick and the TrueFlow Grid Air Measuring System to test over 100 parameters in under 60 seconds!  With these two systems, we'll quickly find the cause of the problem and present you with options for repairs.

Let’s go over several reasons why an Air Conditioner might be blowing hot air...

We are going to skip the simple answers, everyone knows to set the thermostat to 'Cool' when you want cold air (although it happens more often than some would like to admit!)

  • Is your air filter clogged to the point that the systems cannot 'breathe'? - An air filter that is clogged with dust, dander, and fur cannot effectively filter air into the system.  It will impede the cooling ability of the unit, forcing it to work harder, longer, and rack up kilowatt hours on electricity bills.  Replacing a clogged filter can drastically improve system performance.

  • Is the outside unit (the Condenser Unit) full of debris? - Similarly to an air filter, a clogged AC unit cannot properly 'exhale' hot air and can lead to overheating and impaired cooling ability.  These units should be regularly cleaned with a maintenance package provided by Unified Comfort Systems.

  • Is the Evaporator Coil a frozen chunk of ice? - Airflow restrictions caused by a build up of debris, or low refrigerant levels can result in a frozen evaporator coil, a common issue seen on outdoor Air Conditioners.  Turning the unit off is the first step to avoiding actual damage! Its going to be a hot day for your home and you may want to plan a visit to friends or family while the Comfort Professionals work on your Air Conditioner.  Unified Comfort Systems will check your refrigerant levels, recharge the system if required, and check the unit's system with our 25 point safety and operational check.

  • Leaks, Faulty Connections, Damaged Coils, and General Wear and Tear -  All of these can be a reason for low refrigerant – Which can lead to a host of other problems!  It's best to catch it early.  Unified Comfort Systems will check your system pressure, refrigerant levels, seals, and more with our Service Calls or Maintenance Plan.

  • Units that are not sized correctly to cool your indoor space - Air Conditioners are built in different sizes to accommodate the different homes and buildings they will be placed into.  A unit is rated in several ways, most commonly the Energy Efficiency rating in SEER or EER, the Tonnage, and often the Decibels are listed as well to get an idea of how loud or quiet the device will run.  An air conditioner that is too small will struggle to cool your home or office, may run constantly to attempt to keep up with the settings – which will increase your bills as well.  An air conditioner that is too large will run short cycles and cause comfort issues as well.  We use state-of-the-art software for sizing which meets the ACCA Manual J standard.
